Smart highlighting
Highlighting on its own helps little. Read first, find the one key sentence in each paragraph and highlight little. Only then does your highlighter really help.
Why
Amira's history book is nearly all yellow. Yet before the test she does not know what is important. Why is that?
Highlighting feels like work: your pen moves, the page gets colourful. But if you highlight everything, you have not actually chosen anything. A yellow page does not tell you what the core is.
Researchers found again and again that highlighting on its own does little. You can highlight without thinking about what you read, and then little sticks.
Highlighting does help when it forces you to choose: in each paragraph, the one sentence that carries the core. To find it, you have to understand the paragraph, and that very thinking is what sticks.
