Active reading
Reading a text is more than letting your eyes slide over the lines. Look it over first, ask questions, read, say it in your own words and look back.
You can start right here: no prior knowledge needed.
Why
Noor has read the chapter on the plant cell twice. When her dad asks what it was about, she cannot really remember. How can that be?
Reading without thinking happens by itself: your eyes slide over the words, and meanwhile you think about something else. At the end you have seen everything, but remembered little.
Active reading means you do something with the text: you look ahead, you ask questions, you look for answers and afterwards you say it yourself. That way your mind really has to work with the material, and that is exactly what sticks.
Rereading feels familiar, and so you think you know it. Researchers found again and again that rereading gives you little, compared with recalling for yourself what you read.
