Breaking the habit of putting things off

Putting things off is not laziness: you escape an unpleasant feeling. A small first step and a calm space break the loop.

all years10 to 18 yearsDraft: Not yet checked by a teacher or pupil counsellor.

Why

Elias wants to start his French homework. First he watches a quick video, and then another one. At ten o'clock he still has not started. Does that sound familiar?

Everyone puts things off now and then. It is not a flaw in your character and not laziness. Usually it is about a feeling: the task seems boring, hard or big, and that feels unpleasant.

If you then do something else, you feel better for a moment. That relief makes you do it again next time. That is how a loop starts: task, unpleasant feeling, escape, relief. And meanwhile the task grows, because time keeps running.

The good news: you do not have to get rid of that feeling before you start. You only have to take a step so small that it costs almost nothing.
